FREDERICTON (CNB) - Graydon Nicholas was installed today as the new lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick during an official ceremony at Government House in Fredericton.

The ceremony was hosted by Premier Shawn Graham, who noted Nicholas's important accomplishments, as well as the significance of being the province's first Aboriginal lieutenant-governor.

"New Brunswickers are grateful to you for your outstanding contributions to our society as a provincial court judge, an advocate on behalf of First Nations, a community leader, and a proponent of Aboriginal and human rights," said Graham. "This day is a milestone in the story of our province, a day that will always be remembered proudly by all New Brunswickers, especially the members of our First Nations."

In his first speech as lieutenant-governor, Nicholas spoke about his life, his faith, and his personal and professional influences. He also outlined some of his priorities.

"I will use this new role as lieutenant-governor to advance the benefits of education, to promote lifelong learning, and to visit every school in our province to listen to young people to hear their stories, and to make education a worthwhile experience - at every age," said Nicholas. "I also hope to encourage people in New Brunswick to celebrate our diversity. It is our differences that make New Brunswick such a wonderful place to live and be."

Both Graham and Nicholas thanked Herménégilde Chiasson for his six years of service.

"Through your tireless work to promote the social and cultural advancement of our province, you've left a distinctive and permanent stamp on the office that will serve as an inspiration to your successor and to all who follow in his footsteps in the coming years," said Graham.

During the ceremony, Nicholas was also inducted into the Order of New Brunswick.

"Your induction into the Order of New Brunswick today is so well deserved," said Graham. "And it's my hope that this tribute - the very highest that our province can pay to any person - shows you just how grateful the people of New Brunswick are to you for everything you've done for us."
