FREDERICTON (GNB) – Twenty students from across the province will attend the Provincial Heritage Showcase which takes place from June 26 to 28 at Government House in Fredericton.

“I have been so impressed by my visits to heritage fairs around our province this year,” said Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau, honorary patron of the Heritage Fairs Program. “I am delighted to be able to showcase the best of the best at my official residence this week. These displays represent talent, creativity, dedication, leadership and enthusiasm for education.”

During Heritage Week in February and French Pride Week in March, 12 regional heritage fairs were held across the province. Students presented hands-on, multi-media presentations on Canadian people, legends, milestones and achievements.

The program is an initiative of the heritage branch of the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture.

“This program is a great example of how we can encourage students to connect with our country’s rich heritage,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Bill Fraser.  “Through the regional heritage fairs, students have the opportunity to research and learn about significant Canadian figures and events.”

A total of 142 schools participated in the fairs, which are organized at the provincial and district level by elementary, middle and high schools.

“The schools and students that participate in these fairs are integrating our heritage into the classroom,” said Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Serge Rousselle. “It is important for the next generation to understand the people and events that shaped our country’s history.”

The provincial showcase takes place every year, welcoming students from each school district to a host community, where they are recognized as contributors to the preservation of New Brunswick's past.

This year's participants are:

  • Sgt. George Walter Patterson – Alex LeBrun, Anglophone North School District, Campbellton;
  • RCAF Double Crashes June 1942: The Story of Sgt. Earl Gay – Hiew Mersereau, Brandon Murphy and Padruig MacDonald, Anglophone North School District, Miramichi;
  • Le violon du Canada – Chantal MacLean, Anglophone South School District, Quispamsis;
  • Acadian Culture and Heritage – Mary Cunningham, Anglophone South School District, Bocabec;
  • Ned Landry: L’expert du violon – Colin Black, Anglophone South School District, Grand Bay-Westfield;
  • Ship Hector and Walter Murray – Machara MacNeil, Anglophone West School District, Oromocto;
  • McAdam Railway Station – Ryan Hebert, Anglophone West School District, Fredericton;
  • Nye Danmark Skihytte – Vanessa Rasmussen and Meghan Goodine, Anglophone West School District, New Denmark and Sisson Ridge, respectively;
  • My Maliseet Heritage – Willie Fraser, Independent School, Madawaska First Nation;
  • Ron Turcotte – Janelle Poirier and Angelina D’Amico, Francophone Nord-Est school district, Campbellton and Tide Head, respectively;
