FREDERICTON (GNB) – Twelve regional heritage fairs will take place throughout New Brunswick in April and May.

“It is important for our province's youth to understand the people and events that shaped our country’s history, especially as we celebrate Canada 150,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “New Brunswickers should be proud of the role we have played in the history of Canada.”

Students from more than 154 participating schools will come together at regional heritage fairs to present hands-on, multi-media presentations about Canadian people, legends, milestones and achievements.

The fairs will take place on the following dates:

• Saturday, April 22: Francophone nord-ouest school district – Musée historique du Madawaska, Edmundston;

• Thursday, April 27: Francophone nord-est school district – École L’Envolée, Shippagan;

• Thursday, May 4: Anglophone South School District – Fundy Middle and High School, St. George;

• Thursday, May 4: Francophone nord-est school district – École Domaine Étudiant, Petit-Rocher;

• Friday, May 5: Independent schools – Fundamental Baptist Church, Saint John;

• Wednesday, May 10: Anglophone West School District – Woodstock Community College, Woodstock;

• Wednesday, May 10: Anglophone East School District – Albert County Museum, Hopewell Cape;

• Wednesday, May 10: Anglophone South School District – qplex, Quispamsis;

• Thursday, May 11: Anglophone North School District – Jacquet River School, Belledune;

• Thursday, May 11: Anglophone South School District – New Brunswick Museum, Saint John;

• Thursday, May 11; Francophone sud school district – Centre multifonctionel de Shédiac, Shédiac; and

• Friday, May 12: Anglophone North School District – Nelson Rural School, Miramichi.

“Regional heritage fairs provide students with an opportunity to creatively show the importance of preserving history, while also strengthening their literacy skills,” said Lt.-Gov. Jocelyne Roy Vienneau, honorary patron of heritage fairs in New Brunswick.

During each fair, students will have an opportunity to join their communities in celebrating local history. They will also compete in 11 award categories.

One student from each regional fair will be selected to attend the New Brunswick Provincial Showcase taking place June 24-25 at the Albert County Museum and R.B. Bennett Centre in Hopewell Cape.
