FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has partnered with the Association of New Brunswick Land Surveyors to provide more accurate and up-to-date mapping of property lines for landowners.

Previously the association operated its own plan database application which needed to be modernized. The partnership has resulted in the development of a new application that is fully integrated within Service New Brunswick’s Land Registry real property information system, PLANET. This gives professional land surveyors access to a more complete and efficient database.

“This is an important partnership,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Mary Wilson. “When you consider the importance of land rights to supporting our economy, it is easy to see that better property mapping and improvements to the land surveyors’ plan database benefits all New Brunswickers.”

The Land Registry maintains the province’s digital property mapping, a graphical representation of all parcels of land throughout the province. The mapping is used by the government, industry professionals and residents in making land-related decisions.

“I am very pleased to see the realisation of this partnership with Service New Brunswick,” said Andre Boissonnault, president of the Association of New Brunswick Land Surveyors. “This sharing of information for the enhancement of the property mapping will both increase the efficiency of our profession and support our objective to serve and protect the public interest. This is a ground-breaking initiative in property mapping in Canada.”

Survey plans are the primary source of information used to maintain the digital property mapping. Registration of survey plans is largely voluntary in New Brunswick. On average only 69 per cent of survey plans prepared each year are registered and available to the Land Registry. Under this strategic partnership, 100 per cent of survey plans prepared will be available to the Land Registry resulting in more accurate and up-to-date mapping.
