SHIPPAGAN (GNB) – Fisheries and Aquaculture Day will be held July 18 at the New Brunswick Aquarium and Marine Centre – Atlantic Canada’s largest aquarium and marine centre – in Shippagan.

The annual event is part of the New Brunswick Fisheries and Aquaculture Festival.

“This festival is an excellent opportunity to showcase the importance and history of our fish and seafood industry as well as the people who work in these sectors,” said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Michael Olscamp. “Fisheries and Aquaculture Day allows for both residents and visitors to meet our staff and learn about our local seafood and agriculture as well as the numerous value-added products that are made from it.”

Visitors will be able to meet staff from the marine centre – which includes employees of the departments of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries and Tourism, Heritage and Culture – and representatives of the provincial shellfish, fisheries and agriculture industries. Those involved with the provincial government’s Buy Local initiative will also be on-site.

The day's theme is From the Lab to your Plate. Activities for the whole family will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. including crafts and face-painting. Musicians will perform from noon to 4 p.m. A number of demonstrations and tasting booths will be located in the convention centre next to the aquarium.

Local producers and processors will be offering visitors free samples of their products. In addition, visitors can enjoy a full seafood meal in the Pavillon Aquatique restaurant located beside the aquarium.
