FREDERICTON (GNB) – More than 40 farms, markets, wineries and community organizations throughout New Brunswick will participate in Open Farm Day on Sunday, Sept. 20.

“Our agriculture and aquaculture sectors are important economic drivers, creating thousands of seasonal and full-time jobs for New Brunswickers to support their families,” said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet. “I encourage everyone to explore the Open Farm Day events in their communities, sample delicious local foods and show their support.”

Activities vary at each location, and include farm and greenhouse tours, food and drink tastings, U-picks and petting zoos. Visitors can catch their own fish from a pond at an orchard in South Cocagne, build a fort from hay in Springfield, view a honey bee operation in Charlo or take a guided tour of a salmon farm on the Bay of Fundy. Most activities at participating locations are free.

“I salute the Open Farm Day participants throughout the province for opening their farm gates to their respective communities,” said Doucet. “This is an excellent opportunity for New Brunswickers to learn about where their food comes from and to develop an appreciation for the hard work of our farmers.”

Open Farm Day is an initiative of the Agricultural Alliance of New Brunswick and is supported by the provincial government. A complete list of events is available online.
