GRAND MANAN (GNB) – The provincial government is investing up to $4.9 million for infrastructure and site upgrades at the Fundy Marine Service Centre on Grand Manan.
“This supports fisheries and aquaculture,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “These are important sectors of our economy, particularly in rural coastal communities like Grand Manan.”
The funding will used to conduct extensive site upgrades and improvements at Ingalls Head, site of the Fundy Marine Service Centre, including lighting, paving, access to electricity and water access for firefighting. A new 200-tonne boat lift will also be acquired to replace the present 28-year-old lift to better accommodate the size and range of vessels serviced at the centre.
“This project is going to modernize the Fundy Marine Service Centre and allow its continued service for years to come,” said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Rick Doucet. “This is a worthwhile initiative that will help the economy of Grand Manan.”
The provincial government owns a total of three marine service centres, located in Shippagan, Bas-Caraquet and Grand Manan. The Grand Manan Fishermen’s Association has an operational agreement to operate the Fundy Marine Service Centre.
“The Grand Manan Fishermen’s Association thanks the provincial government, Premier Gallant and Minister Doucet for their hard work and investment in this most important infrastructure improvement project, which will be beneficial to commercial fishing, the aquaculture sectors as well as recreational and commercial industries,” said Brian Guptill, president of the association.
