MONCTON (GNB) – The federal and provincial governments are partnering on the next phase of improvements to Elmwood Drive in Moncton.

The project involves widening a 2-kilometre section near the new Moncton High School. The estimated start date for construction is 2017-18 with completion expected in 2019-20.

“This investment will improve traffic flow and safety in this area,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “Safety has been a growing concern as the area transforms from a rural to an urban environment with residential and commercial development and the opening of the new Moncton High School.”

Work will include installing a storm sewer system, widening the roadway to accommodate four lanes, building a concrete curb and the addition of sidewalks. This section of Elmwood Drive is currently a two-lane rural arterial roadway with a ditch system for drainage.

The project is estimated at $12.5 million and will be cost shared with funding of up to $5 million from the federal government’s New Building Canada Fund’s Provincial / Territorial Infrastructure Component. The provincial government’s share will come from the Strategic Infrastructure Initiative.

It is thanks to projects like the widening of Elmwood Drive that we will build 21st-century communities and ensure a high quality of life for generations to come.”

Petitpas Taylor attended the event for Infrastructure and Communities Minister Amarjeet Sohi.

This phase of improvements is in addition to work being conducted on Elmwood Drive by the provincial and municipal governments.
