ST. STEPHEN (GNB) – The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure, as part of its Municipal Designated Highway Program, will fund curb and gutter repairs along 650 metres of Route 170 in St. Stephen.

A tender will be issued this spring for the work, which will help to control water flow, preventing erosion and property damage that can sometimes occur without modern curb and gutter systems. The work on Route 170 (Milltown Boulevard) will be between Church Street and the customs office.

“Having modern infrastructure is key to the sustainability and growth of any community,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser. “We know municipalities like St. Stephen depend on having a strong provincial partner in order to grow and develop. We are listening to them, and we are getting things done.”

The government received over $210-million in funding requests through this program in 2016. Fraser said the demand demonstrates how essential such funding can be to communities across the province.

“When you invest in communities, you invest in people,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister John Ames. “We are working hard to make sure New Brunswick is one of the best places in Canada to work, live and raise a family. St. Stephen is a beautiful town, and one that is more than deserving of an investment like this. Infrastructure projects of this kind will help make a good impression on those who visit, work and play here, in one of New Brunswick’s most scenic areas.”

Ames spoke for Environment and Local Government Minister Serge Rousselle.

“Infrastructure upgrades are a priority for St. Stephen,” said mayor Allan MacEachern. “Provincial government support is essential in helping us complete projects that build us up and help make us a great community.”

Funding for the Municipal Designated Highway Program has more than doubled since the 2014-15 fiscal year, rising to $25 million in 2015. It has remained at that level as part of a government commitment to sustain increased funding for municipalities.
