MONCTON (GNB) – Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser said the former Moncton High School is an important heritage icon, and any plan for the building’s redevelopment must respect its cultural and historical value.

Fraser made the remarks while touring the vacant property today.

“The former Moncton High is one of the most architecturally important landmarks in the city,” said Fraser. “The redevelopment of this impressive structure will help fuel continued economic growth in the Greater Moncton area.”

The former school, at the corner of Church Street and Mountain Road, was built in 1935 and closed in January 2015. A new $34-million Moncton High School, accommodating 1,250 students, opened the same year.

Since then, the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure has been managing and maintaining the property at a cost of $250,000 to $300,000 annually, including property tax, water and sewer service, security and heating. The property has been declared surplus and the government is reviewing proposals for redevelopment.

“The potential sale and redevelopment of this building will eliminate the need for the provincial government to continue paying maintenance costs,” said Fraser.

The redevelopment of surplus property is consistent with the New Brunswick Economic Growth Plan, the government’s framework to move the economy forward.
