BATHURST (GNB) – The provincial government has partnered with the City of Bathurst to install a sign at the East Bathurst Wharf reminding ice fishers to be good stewards of the environment.

“Ice fishing is an excellent way to enjoy our province’s waterways during the winter,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Brian Kenny. “Along with this enjoyment also comes the responsibility of ensuring that our recreational activities do not harm our environment.”

The sign was posted at the wharf because it is a popular ice fishing site and because in the past there have been issues with shelters not being properly maintained.

“The City of Bathurst is happy to work with the Province of New Brunswick to ensure proper dismantling of the shanty village at the end of the season,” said Bathurst Mayor Stephen Brunet. “Bathurst is gifted with many waterways within its boundaries which provide a wonderful opportunity for ice fishing and other activities. We encourage all to enjoy these recreational activities while respecting our waterways and our environment.”

Under the Clean Environment Act the owners of ice fishing shelters must:

  • post their name and address clearly on the outside of the shelter;
  • mount shelters on skids or runners to allow for easy removal;
  • remove all shelters and contents before the spring thaw; and
  • dispose properly of all waste on land.
