GRAND FALLS (GNB) – Under the Small Communities Fund, the provincial government is partnering with the federal government, municipalities and local service districts to jointly invest more than $118 million in infrastructure over the next 10 years. New Brunswick communities will receive joint funding under the Small Communities Fund.

“These investments will help create jobs and boost regional economic development throughout the province,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “Our government is pleased to work with our federal and municipal counterparts to jointly invest in infrastructure to help create jobs in the short term and help set communities up for economic prosperity in the long term.”

“These projects will represent important investments in the drinking water, disaster mitigation and waste water infrastructure that help ensure we have safe, healthy communities,” said Environment Minister Brian Kenny.

“Our government’s commitment to municipalities, big and small, has never been stronger,” said federal minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency Rob Moore. “Through our New Building Canada Plan we are investing in priority infrastructure projects that have a strong impact on the quality of life of New Brunswick’s residents while supporting job creation and economic growth.”

Moore spoke on behalf of the federal Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Denis Lebel.

The Small Communities Fund was announced last year as part of the federal government’s 10-year infrastructure plan for communities with a population of less than 100,000. The fund was created under the New Building Canada Plan 2014-2024.

Eligible categories include highways and major roads, public transit, disaster mitigation, connectivity and broadband, innovation, wastewater, green energy, drinking water, solid waste management, brownfield redevelopment, local and regional airports, short-line rail, short-sea shipping and northern infrastructure.
