FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government officially recognized the two New Brunswick winners of the 12th annual Council of the Federation Literacy Awards in honour of International Literacy Day.
This year’s recipients from New Brunswick are Peter Bowmaster and Jean-Charles Richard.
“Mr. Bowmaster and Mr. Richard are shining examples of New Brunswickers overcoming literacy challenges through hard work and perseverance,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers, who is also minister responsible for literacy. “We are proud to recognize and congratulate these two outstanding individuals today.”
The awards are presented each year to educators, volunteers, learners, community organizations, non-governmental organizations or businesses in each province and territory to celebrate outstanding achievement, innovative practices and excellence in literacy.
“We know that literacy is foundational to early success at school,” said Rogers. “Our government is focused on ensuring families have access to the help they need in developing essential literacy skills. It is a key component of our education plans.”
The provincial government is developing an adult literacy strategy in addition to provisions under the recently announced 10-year education plans, Everyone at Their Best and Donnons à nos enfants une longueur d’avance.
