FREDERICTON (CNB) - New Brunswick athletes and artists were successful at the 6th Jeux de la francophonie canadienne, held Aug. 14-17 in Edmonton, Alberta. The New Brunswick team won the Torch Award, thanks to its 24 gold, 21 silver, and 11 bronze medals.
"I congratulate our athletes and artists on their exceptional performance during the Jeux de la francophonie canadienne," said Hédard Albert, minister of wellness, culture and sport. "The entire province is very proud of them. They have shown determination and originality during these games, and are a source of inspiration for us."
The Jeux de la francophonie canadienne are an initiative of the Fédération de la jeunesse canadienne-française. In addition to motivating thousands of Canadians aged 13 to 18 to exercise their talents in the areas of sports, arts, and leadership, the games are a unique gathering that stimulates discussion and creativity among young people from various francophone communities across Canada.
"The Jeux de la francophonie canadienne offer athletes and artists a unique opportunity to distinguish themselves at the national level," Albert said. "Besides showing off their talents, our athletes and artists also demonstrated that New Brunswick's francophones and Acadians are very lively and dynamic.
"I want to thank the coaches, volunteers, officials, and everyone who supported our young people by enabling them to take part in this great sporting and cultural event."
The next Jeux de la francophonie canadienne will be held in Sudbury, Ont., in 2011.
