SAINT-ANDRÉ (CNB) – The provincial and federal governments are investing a total of more than $59,000 in improvements to an outdoor skating rink in Saint-André.

The announcement was made today by Premier David Alward and Tobique-Mactaquac MP Mike Allen.

“This project will help improve the rink by making it more user-friendly,” said Alward. “Ensuring our regions have recreational infrastructure is important as we encourage our residents to become more physically active.”

The provincial government is investing $36,000, while the federal government is contributing $23,825 through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, an economic stimulus initiative under Canada's Economic Action Plan.

"Our government is investing in communities to create employment and economic growth across Canada," said Allen. "We understand that by investing in recreational infrastructure we are helping to build strong, vibrant communities for our children and their future."

Allen was speaking on behalf of National Revenue Minister Keith Ashfield, who is also minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and minister of the Atlantic Gateway.

The provincial and federal funding will support the construction of change rooms, the installation of new rink boards and bleachers as well as improved lighting. The project will provide an improved recreational facility for residents while contributing to the local economy during construction.

"On behalf of the residents of the rural community of Saint-André, I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the federal and provincial governments for their generous contributions toward the completion of our dome and rink," said Saint-André Mayor Lionel Poitras. "Without a doubt, this project will stimulate our economy, improve our recreational infrastructure and contribute to the health and well-being of our youth."

Canada's Economic Action Plan is providing $500 million over two years for the RInC program to support the upgrading and renewal of recreational facilities in communities across Canada. The RInC program is delivered in Atlantic Canada by ACOA.
