MONCTON (GNB) – The provincial government is pledging $500,000 towards Curl Moncton’s strategic infrastructure project.

“Investing in infrastructure helps create good construction jobs,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “Investing in sport and recreation helps families live active, healthy lifestyles. This investment is a win-win.”

The project calls for the expansion of Curl Moncton’s Lockhart Avenue location to a 10-ice-sheet facility from its present five-ice-sheets. The expanded facility will allow for additional curling opportunities for all ages and better position the facility to host major national and international events.

Gallant will make the formal announcement tonight at 6 p.m. in the lower lounge area of the Curl Moncton facility, 80 Lockhart Ave.

"We at Curl Moncton are extremely grateful to the provincial government for recognizing the importance of curling to the well-being of New Brunswickers,” said Jacques Robichaud, vice-president of Curl Moncton. “This investment will enable us to move forward with our project to offer better curling conditions for all curlers in the Greater Moncton area."

Through its Centre of Curling Excellence, Curl Moncton will expand current initiatives to further promote physical literacy and fundamental skills for children aged 6-11 through the curling.

Funding is conditional on the federal government contributing towards the project and Curl Moncton securing the balance of funding.
