MIRAMICHI (GNB) – The provincial government is investing $210,000 towards the installation of a new municipal park at the old Rankin House site in Miramichi.

“Your government is pleased to once again be partnering with the City of Miramichi on an important community project,” said Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Lisa Harris. “This historic piece of land will now become a wonderful recreational spot for our community to enjoy, and also a place to celebrate Alexandre Rankin and his historic contribution to the region.”

Harris spoke on behalf Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Fraser, who is also the minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

Phase 1 of the project, at $260,000, will include the installation of lighting, pathways, a look-out on the bank of the Miramichi River and various shrubbery and landscaping.

“Renewing our park spaces around the city has been a priority of our council and we are happy to team once again with the provincial government to give Rankin Park a new life that honours the history and culture of the property while also continuing to offer citizens a waterfront green space,” said Miramichi Mayor Adam Lordon.

The provincial investment is through the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture and the Regional Development Corporation. The City of Miramichi will contribute the remaining $50,000.
