EDMUNDSTON (CNB) – A sod-turning was held today to mark the next step in the construction of a new nursing home in Edmundston.

Les Résidences Jodin inc. will have 180 beds and is estimated to cost $48.7 million. It will replace the Foyer Saint-Joseph de Saint-Basile and Villa Des Jardins, which have a combined 156 beds.

"I am excited to be able to mark progress on this project," said Health Minister Madeleine Dubé. "Our government has taken the extra time to balance the needs of the seniors in our communities with the financial situation facing our province. Our ongoing review of nursing home plans is finding efficiencies and ensuring that projects such as this will proceed in the most cost-effective way possible."

Dubé spoke on behalf of Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for seniors, housing and community non-profit organizations.

Following a review, Stultz announced last week that this project and two others would go forward but with savings of more than $5.7 million.

Under the original plan, Les Résidences Jodin inc. would have cost $51 million and had 170 beds. Following the review, it will cost $2.3 million less and include an additional 10 beds.
