SAINT JOHN (CNB) – New housing units for seniors will be developed by Elias Management Group Inc. as the next step in the revitalization of Crescent Valley in Saint John.

"I am pleased to work with all of our partners to contribute to such a worthy project," said Social Development Minister Sue Stultz, who is also minister responsible for Seniors, Housing and Community Non-Profit Organizations. "This development is a wonderful example of all levels of government and the entire community coming together to create quality, affordable housing that will not only have a meaningful impact on the lives of the residents but will also play a key role in the revitalization of Crescent Valley."

The project, estimated at $9 million, is receiving $1.2 million in federal funding to offset construction costs and more than $2.3 million in rent supplements from the provincial government.

"Our government is dedicated to giving a hand-up to those in need, which is why we are proud to have invested in this project in Saint John," said Saint John MP Rodney Weston. "These new units are more than just a safe and affordable place to live, they are key to meeting the needs of seniors who will call them home."

Weston spoke on behalf of Diane Finley, minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Funding is being provided through Canada's Economic Action Plan as well as the recently signed Federal / Provincial Agreement for Investments in Affordable Housing 2011-2014.

"With the future home of the Saint John YMCA secure and the construction of new affordable housing for seniors soon to begin, these are exciting and important steps in the revitalization plan of Crescent Valley as the residents will start to see their great neighbourhood become even better," said Tourism and Parks Minister Trevor Holder, who is also minister of wellness, culture and sport.

Elias Management Group Inc. will construct a 60-unit mid-rise seniors' apartment building. It will include 30 one-bedroom, rent subsidized units, six of which will be fully accessible and 24 of which will be senior-friendly. Half of these senior-friendly units will include roll-in showers. The remaining 30 units are intended as one and two-bedroom market units.

The building will also include a community room and a multi-purpose area to host events and activities.

The 20-year redevelopment plan for Crescent Valley addresses social isolation by changing the neighbourhood to a mixed-income community that targets a diverse population from a dedicated social housing community. Green spaces and structured areas are included to encourage active living and to promote a sense of belonging and ownership for the residents.
