CAMPBELLTON (GNB) – A new transition house for the Restigouche region was announced today in Campbellton.

The Maison Notre-Dame Inc. will replace an existing facility and provide nine beds for women and children who have experienced family violence.

“Providing safe and affordable housing for women and children leaving situations of family violence is incredibly important to our government,” said Families and Children Minister Stephen Horsman. “This development is an example of how our provincial government and the federal government are working together to improve life for New Brunswickers.”

Funding for this development came from the Social Infrastructure Fund Agreement which is a cost-shared agreement between the federal and provincial governments.

“Our government is providing Canadians not only with safe, affordable housing, but is also working hard to strengthen our communities,” said Madawaska-Restigouche MP Réné Arseneault. “These new investments are another example of our government’s commitment to ensuring that victims of domestic violence are able to enjoy a safe and stable environment.”

Arseneault attended for federal Families, Children and Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, who is also minister responsible for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Under the Shelter Enhancement Program, the Department of Social Development will provide $600,000 to Maison Notre-Dame Inc. The program offers financial assistance to repair and renovate shelters and to acquire or build new shelters and second-stage housing.
